FAME/FORTUNE: The job does bring certain "fame" of the local type, but not too much fortune, except for the really unique nature of the experience. Over the years we have met lots of interesting people and lived in exotic places. One of the most rewarding assignments I've had was for the International Narcotics Bureau where I helped draft the Drug Strategy for the Bush Administration in 1990. I worked very closely with the US Law Enforcement Agencies on Asian organized crime and drug trafficking, followed by assignment in Thailand for 5 years coordinating US efforts and working with Southeast Asian countries in the same area
OTHER: may retire next year in the U.S. Having lived in many other countries, experienced different societies and other forms of government, America is far and away my choice. Might like to build houses with Habitat for Humanity

HOBBIES/INTERESTS: My hobby of writing is finally turning a profit, and my second novel is with an agent who is optimistic about publication...it takes place in a little town in rural NJ in the 1950's. Cooking, decorating, antiques. I've taken up painting, and have actually sold some watercolors. I want to work for the environment and I still have a serious interest in all creatures with 4 legs, combine that with working with kids through Embassy and volunteer programs, and my life is pretty busy. we do a little theater, puppet theater (usually as fundraising events, and I still sing, but not as much as I used to. Depending on how my book goes, I have a dream of opening an art gallery..or having a refuge for unwanted animals..or...
INTERESTING EXPERIENCES/TRAVEL: Our whole life has been travel for the past 24 years and I'd say it has certainly been interesting. This is our 11th year on the Executive Committee for the International Eye Foundation in Washington, an NGO dedicated to blindness prevention. We've met statesmen, Presidents, Admirals and Generals, movie stars and celebrities (a few crooks), Nobel Laureates and all kinds of famous people , including the King & Queen of Thailand. In 1998, I had the extreme honor of receiving a personal citation from Her Majesty, Queen Sirikit, for my work with the Thai Red Cross Society. Our friends circle the globe, but the people we went to school with hold a special place in our memories.
PLACES LIVED: Clinton, R.I., then Burma, Paraguay, China, Australia, Thailand, Washington DC and now the tiny island country of Palau. We love Europe, but we have only been there on vacations. We love Asia and have seen a lot of it, and also many places in Latin America.
FAME/FORTUNE: A little I guess. Life in the Foreign Service has been good, glamorous sometimes, very tough sometimes and challenging always. We have friends who have visited us wherever we were, especially Pat (Foxx) and John Subbe (Elaine's cousin) so we've kept some good ties with Hunterdon County. Allen may retire next year, and I'm excited about what comes next.
